California Department of Health Care Access and Information Program

OCHIN, together with our OCHIN+ training and workforce development program, partners with the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) to help rebuild California’s health care IT workforce. We are looking for California residents who want to support healthier, stronger, and more resilient communities.

Though $15 million in grant funding, select applicants can train to become skilled Electronic Health Record Support Analysts, Health Information Management Specialists, or Medical Billers and Coders.

Health Information and Electronic Records Analyst (HIER)

Learn to support a comprehensive electronic medical record system, provide technical insights, and create innovative solutions that help facilitate a higher standard of community care.

Health Information Management Specialists (HIM)

Learn to safeguard and manage the data integrity of a health care organization’s electronic medical record system.

Medical Billing and Coding Certification (MBC)

Prepare for a rewarding medical billing and coding career in a physician’s office, clinic, or similar setting.

Real-World Experience

After successfully completing your virtual coursework, participate in an on-site, full-time practicum with select OCHIN member health centers in California.

All these health centers serve HRSA-designated health professional shortage areas—communities hardest hit by rural staffing limitations, the devastating pandemic toll, and resulting workforce shortages—so they need YOUR specialized skills and dedication!

Additional applicant requirements:

High school diploma or GED
Passing of background check
Current/updated COVID-19 vaccination
Ability to sit/stand for long periods, use a computer, and interpret documents in English
Bilingual/Spanish encouraged (but not required)
